Volunteering a great way to learn new Skills and make new friends

The Bellarine Railway is operated by volunteers of the Geelong Steam Preservation Society, which was formed in 1970. Volunteer Workers are the life blood of the Bellarine Railway. Voluntary efforts of interested persons maintain the tracks, crew the trains, restore and paint the carriages, serve refreshments, sell the tickets. Share the thrills of building and operating this unique and fascinating project.

Maintaining the Railway is a big task, the work can be fun and interesting, and you will learn new skills.

No matter what qualifications the member may bring to the Society, it is certain they can find work that is both rewarding and of tremendous value to the Society. Even where the Society already has someone performing some unique or specialised task, no offer of assistance would ever be rejected.

The following is a very small list (in no particular order) of just some of the skills needed to run the Society:

Volunteers Needed:

Gardeners

Locomotive Drivers (Steam, Diesel, Railmotor)

Publicity skills

Welders

Fitters and Turners

Car Conductors

Electricians

Archivists/Historians

Carpenters

Painters

Boiler Maker

Track Workers

Sign writers

Signalmen / Guards

Carriage Builders

Upholsterers

Fireman (Steam Diesel)

Carriage Cleaners

Plumbers

Booking Officers

Shop Staff

The skills are wide and varied. Members are able to participate in all aspects of the activities taking place in and around the BR. Members can help out in any way. Any trade skills or specialised knowledge can be put to use around the railway, restoring locos or rolling stock, maintaining per-way, crewing trains, selling tickets or many other possibilities.

Each small contribution goes towards the total picture and is most welcome. Individual benefits include being able to share in a wide range of experiences such as labouring over a loco: to being part of the team running the railway, which enables many people to enjoy this great heritage railway experience.

A monthly newsletter keeps members up-to-date with activities and events.
